what this blog is

This blog is a place for two members of a plural system to write jointly and openly.

It is a side-project of a side-project. Our usual place for long form writing is Cohost, but there are some things where you need the freedom and flexibility of your own space. (And it’s good to be able to mirror Cohost posts, too.)

what this blog is not

It is not a place where we (generally) link to our presence on other sites.

It is not a place where capital letters and punctuation are guaranteed; this is a personal blog and we only guarantee those during office hours.

design principles

Logo aside, this site is designed on a few basic principles:

  • To generally resemble the feel of Microsoft’s Zune/Windows Phone 7-era Metro design language; it’s a look we’ve always loved.
    • This means a heavy focus on typography and letting text speak for itself; including the use of lowercase letters in headings and menus.
    • It includes the use of full screen backgrounds on selected pages.
    • It does not extend as far as the fancy page turn animations.
  • No JavaScript. This site is meant to be a joy to zip around, and the fastest JavaScript is no JavaScript.
  • No SEO or analytics. This is a site always meant to have a small audience; us and anyone we link to it. We’re not actively blocking crawlers, but nor will we ever encourage them.
  • The HTML source must be human person readable. We want people to look at it and think “I can make this too.”, rather than an incomprehensible sea of CSS classes.

As you can tell, in our own small way, this site is a tiny rebellion against parts of the modern web.
